An interior French drain — sometimes called a perimeter drain or a drain tile system — is installed inside the basement rather than outside the foundation. We cut a channel through the concrete slab around the inside perimeter of the basement, set perforated pipe in washed stone below slab level, tie it into a sump basin with a pump, and pour the slab back over the top. Water that reaches the footer no longer has to push up through the floor or across the slab; it drops into the pipe and gets pumped out and away from the house.

For a lot of Pittsburgh homes, this is the practical choice. Many properties here have the foundation set within a few feet of a neighboring house, a driveway, mature trees, or a hillside — situations where excavating down eight feet along the outside wall would be disruptive, expensive, or simply not possible. An interior system gets to the same water at the same depth without touching landscaping, hardscape, or the retaining wall holding up the yard next door.

It’s also the right answer for a specific symptom set: water seeping in at the cove joint where the wall meets the floor, damp patches spreading across the slab after heavy rain, efflorescence along the base of block walls, or a sump that runs constantly but never quite keeps up. Those point to hydrostatic pressure under the slab, which is exactly what an interior drain relieves.

An interior drain manages water that has already reached your foundation. It does not stop water from getting there — that’s what grading, downspout extensions, and exterior French drains do. On badly wet properties the durable fix is usually both, and we’ll tell you plainly at the quote which one your house actually needs.
